BLESSING OF WATERS
id421This rite commemorates the Baptism of Christ. It is part of the feast of Theophany. In early times this rite was held on the banks of rivers or lakes, but today it is held in churches. Upon conclusion of Divine Liturgy, following scripture readings, sermons and prayers, the priest submerges the cross, blessing the waters collected in large containers. It is then distributed to the faithful as a healing medicament.
