CYRIL OF JERUSALEM, ST. (315-386)
Famous doctor of the early Church, St. Cyril of Jerusalem devoted himself to prayer and spiritual knowledge from a young age. Initially ordained a deacon, then a priest some eight years later, he impressed those around him with his deep understanding of the mysteries of Scripture and the wisdom of its teachings.
Succeeding St. Maximus in the See of Jerusalem, he spent sixteen of the thirty five years of his ministry in exile and persecution, for he was the victim of insidious slander from the Arians. Not succumbing to despair, he continued to sow the word of God in the hearts of people. Of particular significance in the spiritual and literary heritage of St. Cyril translated into Armenian, is his Catechetical Lectures – teaching on the preparation of catechumens for baptism.
